Classroom Requirements

Course Description – World Geography is the study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on the earth. It is a view of the world by looking at the use of space on the earth and the interactions that take place there. It is not simply maps! The course consists of ten units:
1. The Basics of Geography 6. Africa
2. The United States and Canada 7. Southwest Asia
3. Latin America 8. South Asia
4. Europe 9. East Asia
5. Russia and the Republics 10. Southeast Asia, Oceania, Australia, and Antarctica

Grading System/ Assignments – Per the Social Studies Department standard policy, PreAP test grades and major projects will account for seventy percent (70%) of your course grade. The remaining thirty percent (30%) of your grade will be made up of current events, quizzes, daily work, writing assignments, etc. For regular World Geography the split is 60/40. Major tests will include multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, map/graph/chart analysis, and essay style questions. Your final exam is 20% of your overall grade. Assignments and tests are designed to make you think and not simply regurgitate information.

You will be given major assignments with plenty of time for completion. Do not procrastinate! Rubrics will be established so that you will understand the requirements for grades.

I expect you to do your work and hand in all assignments due on time. Deadlines will be given for turning in late work or work due from absences. Thirty points will be deducted for assignments which you are allowed to turn in late. Thirty points will be deducted from assignments turned in without your name on it.

Class Materials – You will be issued a textbook that may remain at home. There is a classroom set of textbooks available for use on a daily basis. Notebook paper, a binder in which to keep paperwork, and a highlighter are required supplies.

Teacher Schedule – I will be in my room by 8:20 a.m. almost every morning. My conference period is _3rd____. Please let me know if you need any assistance, have a question, or simply need a quiet place to study. Each individual student may schedule tutoring time before or after school. Either you or your parents may contact me at any time. My e-mail address is crousedl@lisd.net.

Teacher’s Expectations and Classroom Rules – Read your student handout for school rules and policies. They are to be followed in this classroom. These include rules regarding dress code, food, tardies, and behavior. Rules that are left to the teacher’s discretion will be handled according to the level of maturity of the class. I take for granted, that by the time you get to high school you are, by and large, adults. You will be treated that way until you wish to be treated otherwise. I expect you to be in your seat by the time the bell rings. Being late, wandering around the room, and wasting time will not be tolerated. We have too much work to do in too short a period of time for any of it to be wasted. Any of the supplies available in the classroom are expected to be returned to their appropriate place when you have finished with them.

Nothing is less welcome by me than someone talking or being disruptive while I (or a fellow student) am lecturing/sharing. Please do not even consider it. Parents will contacted, detention assigned, or referrals issued for those whose behavior is inappropriate. A daily log is made regarding behavior to insure that students and parents understand the behavior issues. The three strike rule will be enforced. If I have to remind you of your inappropriate behavior three times, parents will be contacted. If the behavior continues, you will be assigned detention. If you still have not learned the lesson regarding appropriate classroom behavior, I will write a discipline referral and your assigned assistant principal will handle the consequences.

Remember that this is a required course for graduation. Do not get behind!

I look forward to working with you this semester.
