What's New The Texas Bluebonnet Nominees for 2008-2009 school year is now available. For the list of books click on the link. Students are encouraged to read these nominees when needing a "good" book this summer and for a head start on the next school year. The end of the school year is fast approaching. The last day to purchase a birthday book is May 7. The last student check out day for most of our students begins on May 15 through 23 so we have enough time to get all the books in before June 5th. Watch for information coming home about a Warehouse book sale. This sale will provide the students with an opportunity to purchase books at reduced prices to read over the summer. About Our Library Wellington Elementary School Library opened during the 1998-1999 school year. In our collection there are 79 audio books, 593 biographies, 3,140 picture books, 2,832 chapter books, and 5,064 nonfiction books. Ms. Judy Ketola is the librarian. She has been librarian at our school since 2001. She has her Master of Library Science degree from Texas Woman's University. Ms. Victoria Watkins is our full-time library aide. This will be her third year working at Wellington. She is our former PTA President and started our very popular Birthday Books Program.

Library Programs Scholastic Book Fairs Each year our PTA sponsors two Scholastic Book Fairs. The Fall fair benefits our library. We have purchased sets of encyclopedias, president books, books requested by kindergarten plus many others. The Spring book fair proceeds go to PTA. Our students love attending the book fair. We really appreciate the support from our students and parents in making our book fairs very successful. This fall our book fair will be from October 10-19. To find when your student will be attending the book fair, click on schedule in October. If you are interested in volunteering to help with this fun activity, please contact the school. Reading Incentives Read to Succeed Many of our students take advantage of the reading incentive programs we have at our school. Each year our school registers for the Read to Succeed Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club. All students who complete only six hours of reading during the designated time receive a one day ticket to Six Flags. Information about this year's program will be sent home before the Christmas holidays. K-2nd Reading Incentive Kindergarten students to Second grade are encouraged to take part in a reading incentive program where they are required to read a certain number of books by different authors based on their grade level. The purpose of this program is to introduce our beginning readers to a variety of series books that may be of interest to them. This reading incentive encourages students to try different authors who have written popular fiction books. Students in each class get a chance to win a poster or book. Let's Read incentive will be ending on November 8. Read to Achieve Beginning December 11 we are starting the Texas Tornado's Read to Achieve program where students can earn tickets to the Tornado hockey games. On December 5 we will kick off the reading program with a visit from some of the players. This program will continue until January 18. During that time students are asked to read three books on their reading level and write about them. For every three books the student will score a Hat Trick which will earn them a ticket. Two tickets are the maximum that can be earned.
Texas Bluebonnet Program The Texas Bluebonnet Nominees is an award program by the Texas Library Association. Each year students in grades 3-5 vote for their favorite Bluebonnet Nominee out of twenty preselected books. To be eligible to vote on this important award, all students in grades 3-5 at Wellington are required to read five nominees. These nominees range from nonfiction to fiction and may be picture or chapter books. |
