Medications
During School Hours
![]()
Sometimes it is necessary for medications and/or treatments to be given during school hours. Most three times a day medications can be given before school, after school and at bedtime. Please check with your physician or pharmacist for his or her recommendations. If your child does need medication at school, please use the following guidelines in sending medications to school.
1. The school does not supply medications for students. All medications must be supplied by the parent in the original packing and must be approved for use in children according to the packing label and the FDA.
2. All medications are best if delivered by a parent. If this is not possible, then please inform the school nurse that you have sent your child to school with medication at (972) 350 – 4204 first thing in the morning.
3. The medication must be current, in the original container, and labeled with the student's name and the name of the drug. It must be consistent with FDA recommendations and necessary for administration during school hours. It must also be prescribed by a physician with prescriptive authority in Texas.
4. Over-the-counter medications (in original packaging) will require a doctor's note after 5 days. This includes sore throat lozenges. Please complete an OTC authorization form and send to school with your child. To get a copy of the OTC Form, click here.
5. All medications must have a written request to give from the parent or guardian. It must include the child's name, name of drug, time to give, dosage, condition for which drug is needed, time of last dose, and parent signature. All long-term medications require an order from the physician as well. Please complete a Medication Authorization Form for all long-term medications and send to school with your child. To get a copy of the Medication Authorization Form, click here.
6. If your student takes Asthma medications, please attach an Asthma Action Plan filled out by your physician in addition to the Medication Authorization Form. For an Asthma Action Plan Form, click here.
7. Vitamins, nutritional supplements, experimental medications or therapies, therapies inconsistent with FDA recommendations or contraindicated by student's condition or other factors, homeopathic, naturopathic, herbal remedies, out-of-date, prescribed for someone else, allergy shots and remedies of unknown content or benefit will not be given at school.
8. All medications to be given at school must be kept and administered in the health room using the above guidelines. The only exception is HB 1688, which "Allows students to self administer asthma mediations while at school or school functions with permission from parents and physicians." A school medication Self-Carry Agreement must be completed by the parent and the physician and kept on file with the school nurse. Principal approval is required and must be updated each school year. Please complete a Medication Self-Carry Agreement Form and send it to school with your child. To get a copy of this Form, click here.
